Who will own the creator economy? A web2 vs. web3 showdown
Great visualizations in this post (great for visual learners like me)
How creators make money on web2 š
Main complaints from web2 creators š
TransparencyĀ - most Web2 platforms arenāt particularly transparent about how much money they make from a given creator and where this revenue goes.
Moderation & censorshipĀ - centralized platforms can ban or demonetize your content if they decide that it doesnāt abide by their policies. But they often donāt implement these policies consistently, causing frustration and fear among creators.
Policy changesĀ - adding even more confusion, these platforms can change their policies at any time with no prior warning.
FairnessĀ - at a fundamental level, thereās disagreement about how to fairly split revenue. These platforms rely on user-generated content - but theyāre not willing to give creators the majority of the earnings!
Advantages of web3 š
Creators can own their communities
Communities members can own a piece of the community through social tokens, NFTs, etc.
More transparency (spectrum) in decision making and deciding the future of the community
Our Decentralized Selves: Creating in a Post-Identity Future
As we move more of our lives into the digital world (some would call the metaverse), our identity can be different than IRL or in the web2 space. Identity unlocks web3 offers š
Physical: there are no limits to how you look and you can change your look as often as you want
Pseudonymous: Being anonymous (annon) allows for people to reinvent themselves in web3. One person can even have a different identity and spin up a new one at any time. This also protects the individual from bias because identity is only associated to what is on-chain and reputation within the community

šĀ Opinion of the week
EthDenver, One of the largest web3 in-person events is starting next week. Despite the online nature web3 of web3, the most important layer is people (some call this layer0). People coming together in person, sharing ideas, and making new connections is extremely powerful. If you are planning on attending, let us know in the discord! Weāll be there! If youāre not able to attend youāll be missed but I will be doing a debrief on the DAOly post after EthDenver.
